Here we are. The group phase is now over, and the surprises we witnessed during the last matchday are still going round our heads. As do some of the fan chants ( “Will Grigg’s on fire” anyone?).
Tomorrow, the final round will start and to make things even more interesting, we didn’t just have one, but two talents topping of our U23 selection: Irish midfielder Robbie Brady and Portuguese talent João Mário.

Let’s start with the Irish wonderboy. Brady, all-time top scorer for Ireland’s U21 , put his skills on show during the closing game of Group E as Ireland snatched a dramatic late win over Italy which also meant qualification to the final round of this Euro Cup. An opportunity for revenge against France is awaiting (remember the handball?): good luck, Ireland and Slainte !

Profile: Robbie Brady (approx.€6M - Source: TM.de)
Comparison: Antonio Candreva, Marko Pjaca, Marko Arnautović
Strength: Crossing, Aerial Duels, Key passes, Taking set-pieces, Defensive contribution, Tackling
Weakness: Passing, Holding on to the ball

Robbie Brady’s stats against Italy:
1 goal
100% shot accuracy
3 chances created
81% avg. pass accuracy
7.6% possession

And now it’s time for the Portuguese talent João Mário. Cristiano Ronaldo might capture the limelight with his goals and his “interesting” reactions...

… but it was the 23-year-old João Mário who took Portugal’s fate on his shoulders and drove the tactical decision making of the team. Now Portugal will fancy its chances, being on the “easy” side of the knock-out stages. But we have already seen too many upsets in this Euro Cup to make a judgement. Good luck to you too, Portugal!

Profile: João Mário (approx. €20M - Source: TM.de)
Comparison: Arda Turan, Marcel Sabitzer, Ante Ćorić

João Mário’s stats against Hungary:
1 assist
5 dribbles
85% avg. pass accuracy
63% duels won
7.3% possession

Unfortunately, our most favourite team didn’t make it to the semifinals. We are all disappointed, but we can’t deny that the performance by the Frenchies was brilliant. And, above all, we got the chance to see again the real Paul Pogba.
